EFT tapping, or Emotional Freedom Techniques, can be used for nearly any life challenge.  But could you use if for grief?  When someone near to you dies?

Right after someone dies, there are things to take into consideration.  Here are some things to consider about when and how to use tapping therapy for grief.

Don’ts
1.  EFT isn’t a good idea directly after a death unless it’s been specifically requested.

2. Typically, we’re given the advice to be very specific with EFT, but, don’t be specific when death has just happened.  Use instead, general tapping phrases like, “This grief.”

3. Don’t expect anyone to “just get over it” with a few sessions of EFT.  The process of grieving has a number of stages to pass through. It can take months or years to fully process a death.

4. Don’t try to do formal EFT unless the grieving person already knows it and asks for your help.

Grief EFT Do’s
1. Surrogate tapping is great for grieving people.  With this method, you simply use EFT yourself as if you are the grieving person.

2. If you’re invited, or it feels right, go ahead and do EFT with the person grieving.  When the person is feeling the emotion strongly, words aren’t needed.

3. Tapping can help integrate and soften the highly painful emotions of shock and horror.  If you have permission, tap on their fingertip points while they simply feel their feelings.

4. Let the grieving person know that all thoughts and feelings are normal, healthy and OK.  They may feel guilt or anger or resentment at the person who left them behind.  People feel a whole range of emotions after death.

5.  Be willing to wait weeks, months or even years before the grieving person is open to your tapping help.

6. Let the person who’s grieving lead with their thoughts and emotions.  Venting is the most appropriate thing to do at this stage.  It’s not necessary to impose any type of choosing to be happy.  That would likely bring up lots of resistance.

I trust that the above EFT techniques helpful for working with people who are grieving.
