Bereavement Leave Federal Laws are Non-Existent

We don’t know what the future has in store. Sometimes, tragedies merely happen. A case of this is when a loved one dies and we didn’t expect it. As for the employer with an employee who’s currently mourning, the bereavement leave federal laws do not apply but he or she must know the limitations before actually taking this.

Studies show that almost 90 percent of companies in the US grant bereavement leave. However, there are some companies that do not have bereavement leave federal laws, even when the person who passed away is an immediate family member or a close relative. If you are fortunate to work for a company with the former regard on the issue, then you are given three days off with pay.

There are few places of employments that give five days off with pay not because of bereavement leave federal laws. Some companies may even allow the person to take additional time in order to arrange personal delays or enough time to recuperate. However, these are no-pay days already. For you to be sure, read your Employee Handbook on your company’s position on the matter

Paid leave for vacation, holidays, sickness, including bereavement is considered to be benefits of an employee from the company that he or she is working for. Every business, institution, or company has policies clearly outlining what these are. There are no state laws that require the benefits to be given, therefore there are no bereavement leave federal laws. That is why the bereavement leave federal laws do not apply or companies do not have these because it simply does not exist. The company policies just clearly state how much time is given to the mourning employee.
