Bereavement Leave Concern
Each company has policies on bereavement leave. The use, eligibility, applicable individuals, and granted time off vary from one company to another. Some companies have definitions on who is allowed to have bereavement leave. One of the concerns they look at is who passed away? They only grant bereavement leave to the employer if the person who passed away is an immediate relative.

There are some companies who allow bereavement leave to employees who have been with the company for a long period of time. Those with a long tenure can enjoy days without pay. This allows them to arrange what needs to be done and to recuperate from the tragedy. At the other side of the pole, those who have not been with the company long may have limited days off with pay. Sometimes, they’ll be granted days so that they could mourn and be with their loved ones during a time such as this, but these wouldn’t be paid.
In cases when additional time is needed, then it is in the discretion of the employee. It is up to him or her whether it is alright to not report to work so that more quality time with family can be had.
A question in most people’s minds when it comes to the matter of bereavement leave is whether the supervisor is required to grant an employee a bereavement leave. Well, these are not questioned. In fact, there are no bereavement leave federal laws because the discretion and judgment on this involves only the employee, the employers and the company.
